The SPIRIT MASKS started with the plexiglas framed STORY MASKS. These appeared in the late 90′s and were a direct result of watching my parents become elderly. I thought a lot about telling a life story, presented as a collage of sorts contained within a protective box. Created with paint, findings, palm, willows, paper, twines, metals, shells and feathers, these pieces were a good fit with my evolving primitive imagery and orientation as an artist. The boxes were cumbersome and difficult to carry to shows and were soon replaced by the light hearted GOO-ROOS. Production of these masks ended rather abruptly without conscious intention and though I continue to save materials to create them and would like to have some for my own art collection, they remain dormant.
