WILLOW l ENCAUSTIC l MASKS l TAPESTRIES

Out of the “Story Mask” backgrounds of the late 90′s, my 2D acrylics were spawned. Background painting emerged as stand alone elemental abstracts. Focused by birds, figures, architecture and elements, they were the forerunners, in turn, of the current encaustic paintings. As in all of my art, there is the juxtaposition of the contemporary and the primitive, intended to symbolize our vital connectedness with ancient times.
In an effort to marry the willow sculpture with the acrylics, I began my ancient tableau series incorporating willow mats to symbolize protective encasements for ancient written language. The extension of this idea into the new encaustics becomes obvious when viewing the acrylics first. Though no longer in production, I do have a sizable collection at my studio on Whidbey Island.
